The Challenge Made Me Stronger

I remember it like it was yesterday when both of my parents were diagnosed with cancer at the same time. At first, I was very numb and frightened at the possibility of losing them both so soon. I kept saying to myself this can't be really happening. Why would God do this? In that moment, I felt so helpless and fragile. How can I be the support that my parents need when I'm falling to pieces? How can I help care for them without breaking down and crying? "How God?", I asked. Then the Holy Spirit reminded me that "God is my refuge and strength, a very present help in the time of trouble". (Psalm 46:1) That word brought the peace, comfort and strength that refused to allow the diagnosis of cancer to win.

I held on to those words as I watched them endure chemotherapy, radiation, hair loss, nausea and extreme fatigue. It is so difficult to watch a parent go through so much pain but I realized that the same strength God had given me, He also had given to them. I watched both of them press their way through every challenge, not looking like what they were going through. It was this great challenge that actually strengthened my parents - and me in the area of our faith and trusting God no matter what it looks like. Every day wasn't easy. Some days were filled with long visits at the doctor while waiting in packed waiting rooms. God is faithful and will never put more on us than we can bear. I have watched both my parents ring their last treatment bells and walk in complete healing without a trace of cancer.

God showed me his strength in such a new and profound way during this journey. When I didn't think I could handle the trial placed before me the strength of God raised me up beyond my own thinking and emotional capacity. I'm beyond grateful for God healing my parents and using them to be a testimony of His healing power. This challenge has developed me spiritually and made me realize that the strength I thought I didn't have, God had already instilled it in me. The Challenge Made Me Stronger!
